Music I’m Looking Forward to in June
As the month of May comes to a close, I thought I would discuss some of my concert and listening plans for the month of June. Cotter Ellis gears up for his first full tour with Goose, which starts on June 4, at The Factory in St. Louis. Tuesday’s show will be the first of four upcoming shows next week. I will also be in attendance for the Dead & Company, show next Saturday. I have listened to many shows from the band’s residency at Sphere so far, and they seem to be picking up right where they left off after last year’s shows. I can’t not wait to detail both the show and my experience after I get back from Las Vegas.
May 1977
As Deadheads, around the world prep for Dead and Company to take over Vegas with 24 shows at The Sphere starting on May 16, I think it’s only right that we also celebrate the incredible music that was played 47 years ago next month by The Grateful Dead on their Spring 77 Tour. If you have been wondering what the music is all about I think listening to any show from May 1977 is a great way to start your Grateful Dead listening journey.
Goose Announce 4-Night Run at Capitol Theatre
After two very engaging Chateau Sessions, Goose has decided to welcome their new drummer a little earlier than expected. Cotter Ellis’ first shows with the band will be played next month at The Capitol Theatre, in Port Chester, NY. The shows will take place April 7-10. I can’t wait to hear how Cotter grows into his new role with band, and hopefully this four-night run will be a great indicator for what is in store for the band as they gear up for their Summer tour which begins on June 8.
The Best Music Channel on YouTube
Rick Beato has one of the best YouTube channels I have ever watched. For someone who analyzes music as much as I do, Rick’s channel has been a great resource to learn about what makes some of my favorite music memorable. I recently watched a conversation between Rick and Stewart Copeland, the drummer of The Police. There were many different topics discussed during this video, that I was unaware of. One of the best factoids I learned from the video is that Stewart’s brother Miles produced a few of the band’s records. This is just one example of hundreds of music-related videos on this channel.
Where To Start Listening To Goose
One of the things I have noticed over the time that I have spent listening to jam bands on a more frequent basis, is how difficult it can be to figure out where to start listening to a band with as many shows available. With that being said if I had to pick one era of Goose to start with I would go on YouTube and find any video of any show from March 2023 on. I have said for months now that the best Goose show is either the one I’m listening to, or the next one. I hope this helps you navigate your way though the large amount shows the band has played and I can't wait to chat about Goose some more when they kick off their Summer 2024 Tour.
Taylor Swift Announces New Album ‘The Tortured Poets Department
On Sunday night at The Grammys, Taylor Swift let the world know that she will be releasing her 11th album, The Tortured Poets Department on April 19. As someone who has followed her career consistently since 2008, I can say with some confidence that this is the best sounding album title Swift has come up with.As far as things we know about the upcoming album, Taylor will be join by Post Malone and Florence Against The Machine on two tracks. I have no idea what this album will sound like, but based on the previous 10 albums in her discography, I have a feeling it will be another album fans and critics alike will discuss for a long time.
Goose Introduces New Drummer + Summer Tour Dates
I know it’s only Wednsday but Goose has already made two major announcements related to the band's future. On Monday the band welcomed their new drummer Cotter Ellis, who will replace Ben Atkind. Yesterday the band dropped their Summer 2024 tour dates. The 19-show tour will begin on 6/5/24 at The Factory in St Louis, MO. Goose will finish what I hope is the first leg of shows this year, with a hometown show at Westfield Music Bowl in New Haven, CT on 6/30/24.
Goose to Make Announcement next Tuesday
Early today Goose shared another cryptic post, along with audio, supporting an upcoming announcement scheduled for next Tuesday. Many fans are pondering what this announcement may entail. Is it new tour dates? An Album? The announcement of the band’s new drummer? Personally, I’m hoping that it is tour dates as I can’t wait to see how the band continues to improve as they usher in a new era.
Music I’m Listening to this Week 1/14-1/21
For my first post of the year, I wanted to give a quick update on the music I plan to listen to this week. First up on my agenda is the Spafford show tomorrow night at Thunderbird Cafe Music Hall In Pittsburgh, PA. On Friday and Saturday night I will be checking out two Umphrey’s McGee shows from New York. Last but not least, I am looking forward to diving into Green Day’s new album Saviors to see if the band goes back to their roots.
Goose Can Cover Anything
Another wonderful discovery I have made while listening to over 100 Goose shows since 2021, is the band’s ability to cover a variety of songs with relative ease. I have heard the band play everything from Grateful Dead to Billy Ray Cyrus, Peter Gabriel and Jackson Browne, just to name a few. I would love to hear them cover a Counting Crows song for instance. I look forward to hearing what surprising covers the band plays when Fall Tour stars up in a couple of weeks on September 13.
Goose Songs Everyone Should Listen To
For those of you who have followed my blog for a while, you may notice that I mention the band Goose quite a bit. When I started listening to them in 2021 the first couple of things that caught my attention were the vocals and the songwriting. With that said here’s a list of some of my favorites.
This Old Sea
Arise
Not Alone
Arcadia
Echo of a Rose
This is just to get you started. There are many other songs I enjoy just as much. Happy listening, and I look forward to helping you discover just how amazing this band really is.
Kings Warriors Game 1
On Saturday, I had the opportunity to attend game 1 of the Kings Warriors first round playoff Series. While the 126- 123 victory for the Kings was the best game of the day, what I really want to discuss is the experience of the Kings first playoff game in 17 seasons. Having been to quite a few sporting events in my life, this one had to be up there with the loudest most energetic crowd I’ve ever been a part of. At some points during the game it was so loud, I could hardly hear the PA announcer. Fans filled the downtown commons, 3 to 4 hours before doors even opened. Chants of “Sacramento” were heard throughout the evening. After the game, fans gathered outside of the arena taking of the beam, that is lit up after every Kings victory.
Umphrey’s McGee 2/22 Show Review Sacramento CA
On Wednesday night I attended my first Umphrey’s McGee show in Sacramento, CA. After the first set, I was blown away by the amazing musicianship and chemistry on display. It was truly one of those shows that got better as the night went on. During each song the band flowed between Metal, Reggae, Disco, Funk, and a few others I am forgetting. This may have been my first Umphrey’s McGee show, but it will not be my last. I can’t wait to dive deeper into the band’s catalog and watch some more shows as I wait to see them again.
Dead & Company Playing In The Sand
Dead & Company’s final Playing In The Sand Festival kicks off on Saturday, January 14, at 7:30PM EST. I can’t wait to hear what the band has in store this year, and I look forward to watching and reviewing as many of the band’s shows as I can. I hope you enjoy reading my thoughts on Playing in The Sand, and the band’s Final Tour which begins on May 19.
Sugar Bowl Recap
In the 2022 Allstate Sugar Bowl, between the Alabama Crimson Tide and Kansas State Wildcats, Kansas State started the game with an early 10-0 lead, thanks to a 88 yard touchdown by running back Deuce Vaughn. After that touchdown however, the Crimson Tide began to roll. Alabama quarterback Bryce Young finished the game with 345 yards and 5 touchdowns helping his team to a 45-20 victory I hope today’s College Football Playoff Semifinals are a little more competitive than this one.
Heading to my first Goose Show in April
After a year and a half of listening to nearly every Goose show I am finally going to see them in San Francisco next April. I am beyond excited, and hoping to run into some of my fellow Goose enthusiasts. If you’re interested in joining the gaggle, be sure to check out their next two shows to celebrate Goosemas next weekend on nugs.net.
Taylor Swift Announces New Album Midnights
Sunday night at the VMA Awards, Taylor Swift announced that her 10th studio album Midnights will be released on October 21, 2022. The album will be her 5th album to be released in the month of October during her career, joining Taylor Swift, Speak Now, Red and 1989. According to Taylor Swift‘s Instagram post her latest album will have 13 tracks. As of now, this is the only information we know about Taylor Swift‘s upcoming album. As more information gets released about the album I’ll be sure to write some follow up posts, along with a full review of the album sometime in late October.
Goose Dripfield Summer Tour Review Dillion, CO 8/17/22
Goose played one of the best shows of their Summer Tour last night on their second night at Dillion Amphitheater in Dillion, CO. Even though I wasn’t in attendance, I could tell that there was definitely some “Colorado Magic” in the air. The show began with a solid version of one of my favorite songs the band plays “California Magic.” The band followed that up by playing the song “Switchin’”. The next song “Borne”, was one of my favorite jams of the night extending to about 27 minutes. I’m always impressed how bands are able to take a song to places where the song doesn’t even sound like itself anymore, but still come back to the original feel at the end. After that, the band smoothly transitioned into the bluesy “Dr. Darkness.” Goose closed the first set with the best “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo” I’ve ever heard.
Set two opened with a relatively mellow “Honeybee” followed by a dark “Wysteria Lane”, which had the crowd up and dancing in the Colorado night. The most surprising song in the second set was “Your Ocean” which is a song the band doesn’t play very often. Before that, the band covered “It’s My Life” by Talk Talk. The jams continued with a stellar version of a fan-favorite “Madhuvan” to close set 2. The band encored with “Turned Clouds”, the first track off of their debut record. Last night’s show is one I will be listening back to on repeat, once the audio is released. Based on how great the band played in last night’s show, I feel fans are in for a real treat tonight when Goose plays the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison, CO.
John Mayer Montana Fundraiser Shows on Nugs.net
John Mayer announced on his Instagram yesterday that two of his three Rise for The River Shows will now be live-streamed on Nugs.net. The first show will be on Monday August 8, with Bob Weir as a special guest. The second show will take place on Sunday August 21. All shows will take place at Pine Creek Lodge in Livingston, Montana. The money from ticket sales and video streams from the concert will benefit areas impacted by the Yellowstone flooding. The cost of each stream will be $20. I cannot wait to see and hear what John has planned for what should be a couple of special shows.
Ty’s Picks a New Series Coming Soon
After listening to all of Dead & Company’s latest Summer Tour, and listening to a lot of Goose’s Spring Tour, I thought it might be fun to blog about some of the shows in a new format. I’m planning on writing about my favorite Dead & Company and Goose shows in a series called “Ty’s Picks.” I was inspired to do this after listening to some of the Dick’s Picks series, which former Grateful Dead archivist Dick Latvala started. I hope you stick around for the fun. In the meantime though, I have a lot of listening to do.
